Disability Hate Crime Webinar, Tuesday 12 October, 1:30pm – 3:00pm

Join Disability Equality Scotland on Tuesday 12 October, 1:30pm – 3:00pm as we host a webinar discussion about disability hate crime.

In June 2021, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service released its latest report ‘Hate Crime in Scotland, 2020-21’ showing that the number of hate crimes relating to disability had increased by 14% to 448.  This is the highest number of charges reported since the legislation creating this aggravation came into force in 2010.  The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service maintain that around 97% of disability hate crime goes unreported.

In response to these figures, we conducted a poll which found that over half of the respondents (52%), stated that they would not feel confident to make a report of disability hate crime. Feedback from our members suggests there was some misunderstanding about when, how and what is required to report a hate crime.

This webinar will take place during National Hate Crime Week and is a chance to hear from Police Scotland about what hate crime is, how it manifests, how to make a report and why it is important to do so. We will then open up the discussions to all attendees in the form of breakout rooms.
