What is Easy Read?

Easy Read is an accessible format that makes written communication easier to understand. It uses simple, jargon-free language, shorter sentences, and supporting images to help people understand information more easily.

We are a founding member of the UK Easy Read Standards Working Group, which is creating national standards for how Easy Read should be written, designed, and tested. You can learn more about this work on our Easy Read Standards project page.

Why produce Easy Read documents?

Easy Read documents make information more accessible to people with learning disabilities.  They can also be useful for people with other communication difficulties including:

  • acquired brain injury
  • dyslexia
  • people with hearing impairment whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL)
  • people who do not speak English as their first language
  • people who find reading, difficult
  • people with cognitive impairments such as dementia

The Equality Act

The Equality Act (2010) requires organisations to produce information in an accessible format.  Easy Read can ensure that disabled people have equal access to information and are not discriminated against.

Easy Read User Feedback Group

Our Easy Read documents are checked by our Easy Read User Feedback Group. They look at our documents and tell us what is clear, what is confusing, and what could be better. This helps us make changes like using clearer pictures, adding more space, and keeping documents shorter and easier to read.
