What Easy Read is
Easy Read is an accessible format used to share information in a way that is easier to understand and use. It combines clear language, short sentences, helpful images and a clean layout.
How it was developed
Easy Read was developed with people with learning disabilities and is designed around their needs. It is now also used by many other people who benefit from clear and straightforward information.
Our role
Members of the DES Easy Read team are experts in inclusive communication and skilled at creating accessible Easy Read documents.
We are a founding member of the UK Easy Read Standards Working Group.
We are also a founding member of the International Easy Read Community of Practice.
Why Easy Read matters
Many people are excluded by standard ways of sharing information.
Who Easy Read helps
Easy Read can help a wide range of people. This includes people with learning disabilities, people with cognitive issues such as dementia, neurodivergent people, and people who are learning English.
It can also help people who find reading difficult, people who are easily overwhelmed, and people whose first language is British Sign Language.
These documents can reach:
- People with learning disabilities
- People with cognitive issues, like dementia
- Neurodivergent people, for example with dyslexia, dyscalculia or autism
- People who are learning English
- People who find reading difficult or who are easily overwhelmed
- People with a hearing impairment whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL)
The Equality Act 2010 requires organisations to provide information in accessible formats. Easy Read supports equal access for disabled people.

Other services we offer
Consultations and surveys
Consultations and surveys take significantly longer to create as Easy Read versions. This is due to a more complex layout and additional options and instructions for an Easy Read user.
Checking
We also offer a checking service, if you have an Easy Read document you
want reviewed by experts. One of our professional team can check existing
documents and assess against Easy Read standards.
Easy Read User Check
We can arrange
for members of our Easy Read User Feedback Group to make sure your document works in practice. We provide you with a list of their feedback and we edit your document to reflect their insights.
Fast Turnaround
We know that sometimes Easy Read versions are needed fast. Our team aims to work with clients to meet tight timescales, so it’s always worth
getting in touch sooner rather than later.
If a very fast turnaround is needed there may be an additional charge because this can require additional staff and additional hours.
