DES Cost of Living research in 2026 found that 1 in 6 respondents found their food bill to be the hardest to pay in the last 12 months. Food prices in the shops are also rising by inflation every month. In response to the rising prices the Scottish Government have put forward the idea of a price cap on essential food items in the shops.
A price cap is where the government sets the maximum amount of money that shops can set the price for an item. The Government want to know what people think of their idea including; what types of shops the price cap should apply to, what items could be part of the price cap and what ones shouldn’t be and what price capped items should look like in the shops.
